Mental health is a vital part of a person’s overall wellbeing. Mental health problems and problematic substance use (including addiction) can be found among all sections of society. Some people with mental health problems also struggle with problematic substance use.

Mental health and/or substance use problems may be mild, moderate, or severe, and may emerge or re-emerge at different times throughout a person’s life. However, treatment is available and problems can often be minimized by early intervention.

The Mental Health and Addictions Branch is responsible for:

•Providing leadership in provincial policy development and long-term planning;
•Providing leadership in developing best practices to meet diverse needs; and
•Developing partnerships between government, health authorities, service providers and community organizations.
The province-wide delivery of addictions and mental health services is provided through B.C.’s Health Authorities. The alignment of addictions services with mental health services offers opportunities for improving access and responsiveness. Provincial strategies and initiatives for depression, anxiety disorders, mental health literacy and addictions can be found in the resource section below.
