Drug & Alcohol Addiction
People who do not suffer from alcohol or drug addiction have a hard time understanding why the alcoholic or drug addict can't just stop, even after he has lost everything, whether it be career, school, home, family and/or health. When one is lost in the grip of alcohol or drug addiction, he/she knows of no other way to live.
Functioning Alcoholics & Addicts
There are many so called functioning alcoholics and drug addicts that manage to keep a job, go to school, maintain a family, and have not killed anyone while driving drunk on alcohol or high on drugs as of "yet. "Yet's" are those little lies we tell ourselves to help cement our denial. I am not really an alcoholic because I make an above average salary, drive a status car, have a house, don't live under a bridge, don't drink or use in the morning, never drink alcohol or use drugs alone, never use drugs or drink alcohol on the job, the list can go on and on.
However, as time goes on many of us soon realize the "yet's. Pretty soon the family, job or school is gone, often the house is lost, DUI's and run ins with the law become common place. What was mentioned above has only talked about the result of loss in the material or worldly sense.
More About Addiction
Few alcoholics or addicts have given their alcohol and drug abuse much intelligent study. They reluctantly agree they must quit, but keep right on drinking alcohol and/or using drugs. The alcoholic and drug addict live in compulsive slavery. Alcohol and drugs are the only means that makes life bearable and quiets the alcoholic or drug addict's restless nerves. Existence under such circumstances soon makes the alcoholic's and drug addict's life unmanageable.
The Hole in the Soul
What is the real loss in terms of our soul? What are we trying to find in drugs and alcohol that we can't find in the world at large? How can we fill the hole in our souls? Living in a society that applauds individuality, success, autonomy, status and appearance; over community, charity, tolerance, love and kindness may be part of it, we think so. The Aborigines say that as far as the Western Culture is concerned, alcoholics and drug addicts are the ones trying hardest to find God.
Some people are able to quit using drugs or drinking alcohol or gambling on their own, however most of us need help.
